Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has admitted it's impossible for the Blues to ever think about signing Lionel Messi.
Mourinho said Financial Fair Play considerations mean Chelsea cannot pay 'super amazing numbers' to sign the world's top players like Messi.
Over the summer the Barcelona star was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, although it was never thought to be realistic. Despite being one of the richest clubs in the world under the ownership of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea have been more careful to balance budgets in recent seasons.
Speaking to Clare Balding on BT Sport, Mourinho said: “No I have no chance of that [signing Messi].
"Because at this moment there is financial fair play and with the financial fair play we have to follow certain rules, certain numbers and we obviously have no conditions to buy, as you say a ‘super amazing player’ paid with ‘super amazing numbers’ that Chelsea at this moment we cannot do.”
Chelsea spent significant sums of money on the likes of Diego Costa and Filipe Luis over the summer, but sold Romelu Lukaku and David Luiz for hefty transfer fees to offset the expenditure.
In Premier League action on Boxing Day, Chelsea take on West Ham at Stamford Bridge looking to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
It's a busy Christmas period for all English clubs this time of year, and the Blues visit Southampton on the 28th December before a quick turnaround to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on New Year's Day.
