Frank Lampard is rumoured to be extending his loan with English champions Manchester City until at least mid February as Manuel Pellegrini looks to push on for the Premier League title.
Lampard who was brought in initially as cover for the influential midfielder Yaya Toure, has found himself featuring more often than he would have initially anticipated. The 36-year-old has scored four goals in 13 domestic appearances, contributing to Manchester City's strong season thus far as they find themselves in second place. Lampard has also featured in the Champions League and League Cup on many occasions.
With many suggesting that Lampard would be past his former best after leaving Chelsea, many were surprised when Manchester City acquired the former West Ham man and it has come as an even bigger surprise that we are still seeing the late surges into the box that Frank Lampard has made his own over his entire career.
Manchester City's main central midfielder Yaya Toure will be absent come the start of January and the absence could be up to five weeks if the Ivory Coast make the final. This would leave Manchester City short in central midfielders and if Lampard left as well Manchester City would most certainly divulge in the January transfer window but this would not please Pellegrini who will believe that Lampard's vast Premier League experience will help his Manchester City side push for their 5th top flight title.
Pellegrini is fully aware of the problems the African Cup of Nations could cause but is trying to see the positives. He said: "One of the reasons we asked him [Lampard] to play here was because we knew Yaya would be leaving us to go to the African Cup of Nations.

"Yaya will go between January 5 to 10. We're not exactly sure of the dates, but I think he will play in the FA Cup third round and then go in the second week of January."
Manuel Pellegrini has not yet confirmed that Frank Lampard has agreed an extension to but was full of compliments for the former Chelsea man, "Frank is very important for our team so I hope he will stay here. The reason [for the delay in a final decision on his future] is not important - the important thing is that he stays here".
It is evident that Pellegrini wants Lampard to stay past than the 31st December and it looks certain that Lampard will stay with Manchester City until the MLS season starts again in March.
