The year 2014 has been a great one in the WWE with some incredible moments from The Streak ending to The Shield imploding have all played a part in the success of this year; but the year has also seen superstars and divas put on some incredible performances, with some of them going down as the best matches of the year.

WWE.com have compiled a list of the 25 greatest matches of 2014 with some brilliant entries which highlight just how great certain matches have been this year for various different reasons.

From the technicality of a match, the reaction from the audience, the entertainment value, to how much was on the line and just what it meant to the superstars and divas involved, if the fans are taken on a journey in the match then you know it was one worth watching.

#5 – The Shield vs. Evolution – Extreme Rules

The Shield and Evolution put on a fantastic showing at Extreme Rules which really elevated The Shield into the main event status after they picked up the important win, back and forth action all the way which spilled to the outside and bodies flying everywhere. It was truly a great six man tag team match but little did fans know that it would be the beginning of The Shield’s downfall.

#4 - Adrian Neville vs. Sami Zayn vs. Tyler Breeze vs. Tyson Kidd – NXT Championship – NXT TakeOver

For any NXT fan this match was truly one to remember, as all four men showed glimpses of what they’re capable of inside the ring. From Tyler Breeze moving up a level to Tyson Kidd showing why he deserves to be competing on the main roster on a weekly basis, this match had it all in terms of technical ability and entertainment value as a whole. It also added to the wonderful storyline between Adrian Neville and Sami Zayn which continued for a number of months and was one of the greatest storylines of the year in itself.

#3 – The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family – Elimination Chamber

This was a match where it was so difficult to pick a winner. Both teams were enjoying great success in the WWE and we knew it was only a matter of time the two factions collided. The only downside to this was that there wasn’t a lengthy feud to continue this but nevertheless the fact that we got this match as fans was a special event in itself. The match was of a very high standard, fast paced and very entertaining and even though The Wyatt Family were victorious, The Shield looked very strong.

#2 – Adrian Neville vs. Sami Zayn – NXT Championship – NXT TakeOver: R Evolution

The most recent NXT special event saw Adrian Neville defend his Championships against Sami Zayn in what was an incredible match. The journey the fans went on with Sami Zayn was fantastic, just hoping that one day he would actually capture the NXT Championship before moving to the main roster and he finally managed to do that in a fast paced and explosive match which saw Sami Zayn become the new champion, and Kevin Owens snatching away his moment in the limelight.

#1 – Team Cena vs. Team Authority – Survivor Series

It’s difficult to argue with this one and I think the editors of WWE.com have picked out a great, deserving winner. The match was brilliant, we saw quick, surprising eliminations in Ryback and Mark Henry, we saw a heel turn with The Big Show and that left Dolph Ziggler to somehow pull off a miracle and he did do it, with a little help from Sting who made his debut in the WWE, a historic moment to say the least.
