2014 has not been an easy year for Manchester United.

There was the misery of David Moyes, the unpredictability of Ryan Giggs and now the charisma of Louis Van Gaal.

For all of Sir Alex Ferguson's stability, the Scot's empire has crumbled to the ground in the club's most miserable year in recent memory.

2015 promises much with Van Gaal at the helm

But under Van Gaal hopes are high that next year could bring about a significant upturn in fortunes. They will start 2015 in third, 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea, but with an unbeaten run behind them as a possible springboard for great things to come.

Here are the five reasons why United should be cheerful heading into next year, and why the positives of 2015 could be enough to banish the miseries of 2014.
