Juan Roman Riquelme has been targeted by Montreal Impact following the former Argentinian international's decision to leave Argentinos Juniors last week.

Nobody knows for sure where the talented midfielder will end up, but according to reports, MLS side Montreal Impact want to sign the creative genius.

This is not the first time that he has been linked with a deal in Canada, with the two sides having negotiated a contract for Riquelme back in 2013, before the 36-year-old decided to stay in his native country.

Extra impetus to move

Marca have reported that Montreal Impact have renewed that interest from a year ago, and with Riquelme being a free agent, it's more likely that they will be able to secure his services.

Adding to their chances is the fact that Ignacio Piatti is also on the books in Montreal. Riquelme is likely to be placed under the designated player status, with Piatti the only other Impact player labelled as such at the moment.

Exciting times

It remains to be seen whether or not Riquelme makes the move, but in the meantime MLS fans can salivate over the prospect of such a talented player lighting up America.

Meanwhile, the Impact are also in the market for a striker, and reports have suggested that former Italy international Alberto Gilardino is the man they have in mind.
