When you think of Lionel Messi you picture a footballer with a personality almost as clean as crystal. The Argentinian maestro is arguably the best to have ever stepped onto a pitch, and his off-field record - tax issues notwithstanding - mirror his polished demeanour.

Messi's new tat

Therefore it’s come as quite a surprise that he’s decided to get himself inked with a questionably poor tattoo on his leg. The bizarre tat includes a sword running down his leg surrounded by roses, flanked by a football and his favoured No.10 on either side.

It was the diminutive playmaker’s girlfriend, Antonella Roccuzzo, who unveiled the image on Instagram, and it’s caused quite a stir in the world of football.

The Ballon d'Or

Coincidentally Messi’s new ink comes right in time for the Ballon d’Or award, which will take place in Zurich, Switzerland, January 12, 2015. The Barcelona forward is naturally one of three candidates vying for the top prize of the evening, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Manuel Neuer also in the running to receive one of the sport’s biggest personal accolades.

As far as favourites go the general consensus is that it will be Ronaldo who takes home the award, following his incredible term last season which already looks like being overshadowed by his performances this campaign.

However both Messi and Neuer have fair shouts, with the pair having faced off in this summer’s World Cup final, and the Barca man having broken a number of long-standing records.
