Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has provided a positive injury update on Angel di Maria after revealing that the Argentine winger is closing on a full return to fitness.

The 26-year-old has endured a stop-start beginning to his Old Trafford career, but is set to be back in first-team contention for the Red Devils' Premier League clash against Southampton on January 11.

Di Maria was sidelined for around three weeks before making his return against Aston Villa last month, but then suffered another setback in training which has ruled him out over the busy Christmas period.

The £59.7 million signing from Real Madrid will miss the New Year's Day clash against Stoke City and the FA Cup third round tie against Yeovil Town, but could be back in contention to start against Saints in a little over a week's time.

"He’s coming back," confirmed Van Gaal in quotes from The Express. "I think he shall train with us this week."

When asked to confirm whether the injury was a serious one, the Dutchman replied: "No, I have said that already."

The news will come as a major boost to Manchester United supporters looking optimistically into 2015, with their side sat in third place in the Premier League table, ten points behind leaders Chelsea.
