Manchester United have submitted a bid in the region of £35 million for German international Mats Hummels, reports the Daily Star.
The Borussia Dortmund centre-back, who is recognised as one of the leading defenders in world football, has been linked with a number of clubs of late, with it now appearing that the Red Devils have stepped up in their pursuit to bring him to Old Trafford.
It appears, then, that Manchester United have made their move as they attempt to bring the highly rated centre-half to England, whilst their Premier League rivals Arsenal have also been credited with interest in the player's signature of late.
There's no doubt about it, with this January transfer window now open, fans of United would love the club to complete a deal to land Hummels, but it remains to be seen as to whether Dortmund are prepared to accept the big-money offer.
Dortmund, of course, are enduring a nightmare season in the Bundesliga, and will be desperate to keep their best players as they go in search of climbing the league table. Incredibly, the German outfit are sitting joint bottom of the league table after 17 games so are in need of improvement sooner rather than later.

However, with Manchester United's huge spending power, the fading giants may well look to cash in as they go about improving the rest of their struggling squad.
And United could do with Hummels themselves. Despite sitting in third place in the Premier League table, Louis van Gaal's side have struggled at the back throughout the course of the campaign.
The likes of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling have all failed to maintain their fitness under Van Gaal, so Hummels would no doubt improve their options at the back as they go in search of long term success.
Signing the Dortmund man would most certainly excite United fans as they look to tighten up at the back, but this saga may well run on for a while yet.
