The return of Fernando Torres to Atletico Madrid has absolutely smashed the club’s record for shirt sales since his loan return from AC Milan to Spain.
45,000 fans flocked to see the former Chelsea and Liverpool striker return to his boyhood club in an unveiling ceremony at the Vicente Calderon Stadium on Sunday.
The occasion broke the record for largest attendance at a Spanish club’s new signing ceremony.
But it has now been revealed that the club store alone sold 2,000 shirts with Torres’ name on it just on Sunday.
Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the club sold 222 shirts per hour during the nine hours that the shop was open.
There are no hard figures for shirts bought through other merchandisers but the number is thought to be high.
On his return, Torres chose the number 19 jersey which was last worn by Diego Costa who travelled in the opposite direction between the two clubs last summer.
The choice is supposedly a tribute to his hero Kiko who played most of his career with Atletico.
His customary number 9 shirt, which he wore at Liverpool and Chelsea and during his first spell at the club where he scored 82 goals in 214 league matches, is now worn by Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic.
