All too often spectators are left to ponder if there's any thought going into what their heroes do on the pitch every week, but even by modern-day standards of viral video goal today's entry from Greece is absolutely outrageous.
A cup tie between Veria and Apollon Smyrni is the match in question, with the Wednesday afternoon showdown reduced to utter farce by the actions of hapless midfielder Charalampos Pavlidis.
Veria were 1-0 down when the midfielder burst through on goal and and forced a strong stop from the Apollon goalkeeper with a central drive, that continued to trickle towards goal despite that parry. The 23-year-old hurried towards goal along with a covering defender, but what he decided to do next is simply beyond belief.
Most pathetic handball in history?
With a high bouncing ball just a split second from crossing the line for a timely equaliser Pavlidis decided it was time for a trusty punch, but only served to send the ball clear of danger and cost himself what was surely a certain goal.
Perhaps fortunately for Pavlidis the stand behind the goal was absolutely deserted, stopping any eye witnesses looking at the bizarre incident with more than a whiff of suspicion.
Betting scandal stories imminent?
Pavlidis will surely have to answer some difficult questions about whether the incident was a genuine moment of madness or something more sinister.
One look at the incredible video footage will cause you to think the very same, unfortunate mistake or was deliberate foul play afoot?
