Lionel Messi should beat Cristiano Ronaldo to the Ballon d'Or; here's why (1)

World Cups may be the pinnacle of any nation and the Champions League might be the trophy all clubs aspire to win, but make no mistake; the Ballon d'Or is the prize all top players keep their eyes on. 

This year's trio of candidates throw up one of the most hotly-contested presentations in the award's history, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer all having fair claims to take home the prestigious prize.

Ronaldo has his unbelievable record, Neuer has his fantastic trophy haul - which includes the World Cup - and Messi has his overall contribution to world football, including the smattering of records he's broken along the way. 

For some however it's the diminutive latter who has done more than either Ronaldo or Neuer when it comes to convincing the general population that it should be him who takes home FIFA's most coveted accolade.
