Serie A giants Inter Milan will offer Nemanja Vidic to Liverpool in order to secure the signing of Lucas Leiva, according to reports in Italy.
The Serbian defender has struggled to adjust to life at the San Siro since signing on from Manchester United back in the summer, and could now be set for a sensational move to Anfield in a bid to end his hellish spell at the Nerazzurri.
Roberto Mancini confirmed the club’s interest in Lucas last month, and will be looking to make the Brazilian his second new recruit after bringing Lukas Podolski in on loan from Arsenal last week.
If Vidic does move to Liverpool then it would be a stab in the back to the United fans that still sing his name in such adoring terms from the terraces.
He joined the club at this stage of the season in 2006, and immediately helped Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to silverware with victory in the Carling Cup final over Paul Jewell’s Wigan Athletic a month later.
Three consecutive Premier League titles then followed with the Serbian and Rio Ferdinand striking up a solid defensive partnership at the back, and their contribution also proved decisive as United beat Chelsea to lift the Champions League final in 2008.
The retirement of Gary Neville then prompted Ferguson to reward Vidic with the club captaincy, and despite the rise of Manchester City and continual threat from Chelsea donned the armband in the successful league seasons of 2011 and 2013.
David Moyes’ controversial reign ultimately negated his final season at Old Trafford, and he left for Inter after signing a pre-contract agreement in March after growing disillusioned with life under the Scot.
Mancini has remained coy on reports linking the 33-year-old with a swift exit from Italy, though is set to be active in the transfer market as he sets about replicating the success of his first spell at the club. .
Vidic has been unable to reproduce the displays that once made him the best central defender on the planet, and recently endured more humiliation as the sight of Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Moura skinning him alive went viral across social networking sites.
His confidence looks uncharacteristically minimal, and despite Louis Van Gaal reportedly keen to bring him back to United could now be in line for a stunning move to Anfield instead.
Any such swap deal would suit both parties, with Brendan Rodgers keen on selling Lucas to Inter in order to help fund a potential move for West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino.
Mancini has spoken about the Brazilian midfielder in glowing terms, and will be hoping that the Liverpool ace can be the true heir to fellow South American Esteban Cambiasso, who left the club to join Leicester City back in the summer.
