David de Gea is closing in on a huge contract with Manchester United after talks took a significant step to an agreement, reports The Sun.
Talks between Old Trafford officials and De Gea's representatives have been ongoing for some time, but it is believed that both parties have been keen to find an agreement throughout. That is despite the fact that reports over a potential transfer to Real Madrid has been gathering pace.
But Manchester United have made the 24-year-old an offer which will see him become the best paid goalkeeper in history. The five-year deal will be worth a reported £140,000-a-week, bringing the total value of the deal to £36.4 million.
Tying De Gea down to a long-term deal will be a crucial piece of business as the Red Devils looks to bring in a new era of success in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. The Spain international is widely considered to be amongst the best in the world and could go on to be the best of his generation.
As a result, Real Madrid were naturally linked with a move as Carlo Ancelotti hunts for a an heir to Iker Casillas's thrown. The 33-year-old has won his place back at the Bernabeu but it is generally accepted that his days are numbered.
Real Madrid interest
De Gea, as a Spaniard, was Florentino Perez's first choice and, with just 18 months left on his contract, he was in a position to force Manchester United into a summer sale. But De Gea has reportedly never thought about leaving Old Trafford, instead suggesting to team-mates that his future lies with the Premier League outfit.
The goalkeeper came under pressure after his Premier League record £17.8 million move from Atletico Madrid in 2012. Ferguson dropped him for a stint shortly after his arrival, but gave him a second chance to prove himself. De Gea has not forgotten and is ready to reward Manchester United for Ferguson's faith.
Keeping the faith
His current wages of £60,000-a-week will be more than doubled by the new contract, driving home the importance Manchester United place on him. Louis van Gaal also confirmed that new signing Victor Valdes has joined knowing he will be second choice.
Valdes signed an 18-month deal yesterday having trained at Carrington as a free agent since October with an option for a further year. However, he has been told by Van Gaal that De Gea is the firm number one.
