Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is confident that the Gunners will sign a defender this month.

As reported by The Guardian ahead of Arsenal’s home match against Stoke City on Sunday afternoon, Wenger admitted that Gunners fans will have to be patient when it comes to new signings.

But he still expects to make at least one addition through the January transfer window despite the competition in the market.

“You cannot guarantee,” cautioned the Arsenal boss. “If I give you the names of the clubs who are out with a lot of money to look for defensive players, it’s unbelievable.”

But when pushed, Wenger confirmed he believes a deal can be struck. Asked if he thinks a deal can be made, he replied: “Yes.”

Short and sweet but good news nonetheless for Arsenal fans that have been calling on the Gunners boss to strengthen the defence since last summer.

Having sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona in the summer window, Wenger failed to replace him with another experienced centre-back before the window closed.

Defensive issues

Injuries inevitably struck and hit Arsenal hard, with Calum Chambers thrust into a prominent role despite only just signing from Southampton.

He was identified as a long-term project, one for Wenger to develop and eventually to play at centre-back but he was forced into a starting role right at the beginning of the season.

Nacho Moreal and Mathieu Debuchy, both experienced full-backs, have also been used by Wenger at centre-half this season.
