Mario Balotelli could move to Sampdoria - paper talk (1)

Brendan Rodgers has insisted he has no desire to sell Mario Balotelli in the winter transfer window, but that has not quelled speculation that the Italian could leave Liverpool before next month’s deadline.

Balotelli was recruited from AC Milan in the summer to soften the blow left by the departure of Luis Suarez, who left for Barcelona, but has proved to be a nightmare acquisition for last season’s runners-up.

The 24-year-old has failed to find the net at all in the Premier League since his arrival at Anfield, and has just two goals in 18 appearances - with these strikes coming in the Capital One Cup and Champions League.

It is hardly the return Liverpool would have expected when they outlaid £16 million on the Italy international, and there are fresh reports this Sunday linking Balotelli with a departure during January.

The Mail on Sunday carry the story claiming Balotelli could be used as part of a swap deal for Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero, which would be something of an embarrassing come-down for the centre-forward.
