Manchester United record signing Angel di Maria believes Louis van Gaal has made a shrewd move by landing Victor Valdes on a free transfer.
The former Barcelona ace has penned an 18 month contract at Old Trafford, and will provide competition for compatriot David de Gea.
Speaking to the official Manchester United website Di Maria, who became the club's record signing after completing a £59.7 million switch from Real Madrid over the summer, says the addition of Valdes can only help the club as they look to get back to the top of the table.
“It’s good to have him here with David De Gea,” he said. “It’s important for the team to have such great talent in goal.”
There was some speculation soon after Valdes' move was announced that he could be on board as De Gea's replacement, rather than his understudy. However that was quickly followed by claims that he would be putting pen to paper on a long-term contract worth £140,000-per-week.
Valdes will have to adjust to life in the Premier League quickly if he wants to challenge De Gea, and that's something Di Maria did following his blockbuster move. The Argentinian international settled into life in England straight away with three goals in five Premier League games, although it's not been plain sailing since then.
Injury has limited him to just 12 Premier League starts overall, but now he is back fully fit and ready to fire. Indeed the 26-year-old says he wants to prove to the Manchester United fans that he is the real deal.
It is difficult for a player, especially when you come to a new club,” Di Maria explained. "You just want to arrive and you want to show them how well you can play.
“So when these things happen, it is unfortunate but, that said, the important thing was that when I came back, I needed to make sure that I could help the team and that’s what I did.
“It’s important for me and important for the team to be really doing my best and showing what I am capable of."
