Manchester United’s strike-force will be overhauled this summer if manager Louis van Gaal gets his way. The Dutch coach has plans to axe both Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie from his squad.
This is according to the Daily Star, who understand United have little interest in renewing Van Persie’s contract following a disappointing first half of the season. The 31-year-old has 18 months left on his current deal and the Red Devils will consider cashing in on their £24 million signing this summer if the right offer comes their way.
Falcao, meanwhile, is edging closer towards leaving Manchester United after Van Gaal left him out of his 18-man squad for last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton. The on-loan Colombia international would cost £46 million to sign from AS Monaco this summer, but it seems there is only a very small chance of a deal happening.
Falcao struggling to hit top form
Falcao was forced to deny reports that he stormed out of Old Trafford after being informed that he was not part of Manchester United’s match-day squad for the Southampton clash. The 28-year-old was not even named amongst the substitutes as Van Gaal opted for the inexperienced James Wilson instead.
Manchester United hoped to see the Radamel Falcao who terrorised La Liga defences for two years with Atletico Madrid, but the South American has looked a shadow of his former self since returning from his lengthy injury lay-off at the start of this season.
With just three goals from his first 11 appearances, Falcao is expected to return to AS Monaco in the summer.
Van Persie in decline
Van Persie, meanwhile, is a player who appears to be in the early stages of decline. This is a striker whose best days could be behind him after 18 months of largely disappointing displays.
The arrival of Van Gaal was expected to revitalise the Dutch striker after a frustrating, injury-hit campaign under David Moyes - but, barring the odd glimpse, Van Persie has flattered to deceive.
Should both strikers leave Old Trafford this summer, Manchester United will begin the hunt for at least one world-class forward.
