Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has refused to indicate whether full-back Dani Alves will sign a new deal with the club.

As reported by the Express, this has has handed Manchester United a major boost in their pursuit of the Brazilian ace, as boss Louis van Gaal looks to improve his defensive options at Old Trafford.

United can speak with him

In fact, with Alves out of contract at the Nou Camp at the end of the season, he can now begin negotiations with the likes of United, with a number of clubs seemingly interested in his services.

As well as the Red Devils, the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea have both been credited with interest in the experienced defender of late. Despite being 31 years of age, Alves is still recognised as one of the leading full-backs in world football, so would prove quite the coup for any side, especially if they could land him on a free transfer.

In fact, Alves has starred for the Catalans on 20 occasions already throughout the course of the campaign, but it remains to be seen as to whether he will move to English soil in the near future.

Coy

His president has certainly proved coy over his future, as he told Catalunya Radio: "What concerns us now is that he plays and contributes to the team.

"What is to come, will come. We never explain what we do on the issue of contracts. If it is done, it will be done discretely, like always. We want to be respectful.”

There's no doubt about it, Red Devils boss Van Gaal looks set to monitor the situation extremely closely, with his side seemingly on the search for a new right-back addition.

Defensive struggles

Under the Dutchman's tenure this term, the Red Devils have struggled at times down the right hand side, with Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia having to slot into the full-back role more often than not.

United also have Brazilian Rafael da Silva at their disposal, but he's failed to maintain his fitness and find his best form so far this season.

Van Gaal's immediate attention, however, will turn to this weekend's Premier League schedule as the Red Devils look to return to winning ways as they travel to Loftus Road to take on QPR.
