Finn Balor goes head to head with Tyson Kidd on NXT

This week on NXT we saw an R Evolution rematch as defending champion Sami Zayn made his first defence of the title against Adrian Neville, whilst Bull Dempsey and Baron Corbin finally went one on one in the ring.

A main roster diva paid a visit to Full Sail University as Charlotte’s tag team partner against Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch whilst fans were eagerly anticipating the opening clash of the night between Tyson Kidd and the always-exciting; Finn Balor.

All the focus was on Sami Zayn and Adrian Neville as they looked to steal the show once more as Kevin Owens was also lurking in the championship picture. But it was Tyson Kidd and Finn Balor who kicked off the show to set the tone for the remainder of the hour and Balor started off the match on the front foot.

He hit a running dropkick as soon as the bell sounded and then missed a top rope stomp before hitting a running basement dropkick to send Kidd to the outside of the ring. He followed Kidd to the outside but was thrown into the barricade for his troubles.

Kidd then went on to dominate the majority of the match but Balor fought back with a Pele Kick to get back in it for a short while until Kidd hit a running chest kick from the apron and a springboard elbow drop for only a two count.

Eventually Kidd locked in the Sharpshooter and after a small struggle Balor eventually escaped and hit a reverse Impaler and finally followed it up with the top rope double stomp for the victory.

As the match finished, the fans were shown a video package of Sami Zayn capturing the NXT Championship at NXT Takeover: R Evolution before hyping up the rematch.

The highly anticipated clash between Baron Corbin and Bull Dempsey was next and it probably won’t be the last the two see of each other either. Dempsey told the fans that he’s just as undefeated as Baron Corbin and tonight it will be Corbin’s End of Days and the last thing Baron Corbin will hear is Bull Dempsey’s name.

Finally, both men were inside the ring as the fans started to count as soon as the bell sounded. Both men started to throw punches as Bull Dempsey was the first of the two men to fall. The fans stopped chanting at 20 seconds before the fight spilled to the outside, back into the ring Bull slammed Corbin to the mat and headed to the top rope.

He attempted but missed his flying headbutt and Corbin took advantage, hitting the End of Days around the 90 second mark to defeat Bull Dempsey.

Divas action next as Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch took on Charlotte and her partner, Natalya. Renee Young provided the fans with an interesting fact during the match, Natalya and Becky Lynch were actually tag team partners around nine years ago back in Japan so it’s great to see them both come a long way.

It was a great divas tag team match, no team was really the more dominant in this back-and-forth clash and the end came when Sasha hit a knee to the rib twice to slow the match down and back into her teams favour. Charlotte was then brought into the ring who hit a neckbreaker for a two count before Sasha Banks came in to hit the NXT Women’s Champion with a neckbreaker and pinned the divas champion to her own surprise.

Time for the main event with Sami Zayn making the first defence of his champion and both men shook hands to begin the match and Sami hit a quick armdrag to kick things off. Adrian Neville grew frustrated quickly as he wasn’t able to gain any momentum, slapping Sami Zayn and then apologising before Sami apologised and then threw a forearm in his face.

Neville eventually took control of the match but then wasn’t able to connect with the Red Arrow as Sami managed to grab his legs as Neville then blocked the Blue Thunder Bomb. The fans ‘Ole’ chants spurred Sami on as he finally hit the Blue Thunder Bomb, but only for a two count. Zayn then hit a few German suplexes but Neville impressively flipped out of a half nelson suplex before cartwheeling onto Sami Zayn’s shoulders and connected with an incredible hurricarana for another two count.

Zayn looked out of it and told the referee he could carry on before trying to lock in the Koji Clutch, but failed to do so as Neville avoided the Helluva Kick. Adrian Neville followed this up with a huge super kick but Sami Zayn finished the match off by ensuring the Red Arrow didn’t connect, hitting the exploder suplex followed by the Helluva Kick and Sami Zayn retained the NXT Championship.

Sami Zayn celebrated with his championship after the match but it was never going to be smooth sailing, Kevin Owens came down to the ring and hit another powerbomb on Sami before shoving his boot in Zayn’s face, he closed the show by kicking the NXT Championship towards Sami Zayn’s head.
