New England Patriots conspiracy accuses team of deflating balls during Colts win

Published 56 Comments

The New England Patriots ran riot against the Indianapolis Colts to secure the AFC Championship last night, progressing to this year's Super Bowl in the process.

In the aftermath of their 45-7 win however there is one report which, if proven correct, threatens to throw a very dim light on Bill Belichick and his team for their actions during the game.

Bob Kravitz of WTHR (an NBC-affiliated TV station in Indianapolis) is claiming today that he has been told by league sources that the NFL is "investigating the possibility that the Patriots deflated footballs in their 45-7 win over the Colts Sunday night."

In what has quickly become known as DeflateGate, Kravitz claims that officials present in Foxboro went as far as to take a ball out of play during Sunday night's action in order to weight it.

With rain and wind combining to create difficult playing conditions for the two teams it is believed that a deflated ball would make things easier for both the quarterback to throw, and players to catch, the football.

With the Patriots here allegedly under scrutiny it would make sense to assume that, if this really did happen, it would have been Tom Brady and co who would have been handed the deflated balls, giving them the upper hand against Andrew Luck and the Colts.

As yet there has been no official word on the conspiracy theory from either the Patriots, Colts or the NFL but Kravitz believes that should New England be found guilty of tampering with the game balls then a punishment involving the loss of draft picks is likely.

No strangers to controversy

The New England Patriots, under veteran head coach Bill Belichick, are no strangers to controversy and conspiracy theories.

Most famous of course is the Spygate fiasco of 2007 where the NFL found the Patriots guilty of secretly videotaping New York Jets defensive coaches in order to gain inside information on play calls.

This latest allegation of corruption however has the potential to match Spygate for drama at least especially with a Super Bowl appearance having been on the line.

Patriots beat writer Mark Daniels seems far from convinced that Belichick and the Pats would, or even could, have deflated balls to gain an advantage however.

An NFL official has now confirmed that the league are looking into the accusations.

What do you think NFL fans? Do the Patriots have a case to answer, or is this just the anti-Belichick media trying to stir things up? Lets us know in the comments section below...
