West Ham have emerged as shock suitors for Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher according to the Mirror.
The Scottish international is out of contract in the summer and free to walk away from Old Trafford if he chooses. With talks from the Red Devils not forthcoming as yet, the 30-year-old is now considering his options.
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is yet to make a move to keep Fletcher at the club, and he's started just four Premier League games so far this season. According to the Mirror Fletcher will consider his next step after the winter window closes in February.
The paper claims he is leaning towards a move abroad, however the emergence of West Ham as a possible destination could well tempt him. Manchester United have an abundance of midfield players having added Ander Herrera, Angel di Maria and Daley Blind to their ranks his options will likely be limited until the end of the term.
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce reportedly believes he is in with a chance of luring Fletcher away from Old Trafford in the summer in the hope of adding experience to his squad in the hope of launching a bid for regular European football.
Manchester United fans are likely to be unhappy to see Fletcher go if he does indeed depart in the summer. The Scot came through the ranks at Old Trafford and has played more than 200 games for the Red Devils in the Premier League and has often embodied the club's never-say-die spirit.
That is particularly true of his comeback from ulcerative colitis which meant he missed the majority of games for Manchester United across a three-year spell between 2011 and 2013.
However he's now back and fighting fit in the hope of making up for lost time on the pitch, however that may well be in a claret and blue shirt rather than in the red of Manchester United.
