Sale fly half Danny Cipriani has done enough to impress selectors to earn himself a recall to the England training squad for the upcoming six nations.
After putting in a superb performance in Sale’s surprise win against reigning Aviva Premiership champions Northampton Saints 11 days ago, Sale Director of Rugby Steve Diamond has insisted that this chance is much deserved.
“On his performances over the last three months Danny deserves a shot”, said Diamond.
Ciprirani, one of four fly halves in the 34-man training squad, will have to surpass Owen Farell, George Ford and Stephen Myler to add to his nine England caps - he won two replacement caps in New Zealand last summer.
The opportunity to make his case could sway his decision against leaving for a lucrative deal in France, keeping alive hopes of representing England in the World Cup.
Other notable recalls
Another player recalled after a long absence is Quins number 8 Nick Easter. The in-form back row, aged 36, won the last of his 47 caps in the 2011 World Cup. He has found himself outside England selection under Lancaster, but with news of Ben Morgan’s injury has pushed his case to be involved.
Jonathan Joseph has been rewarded for a string of impressive performances, with the last coming against Toulouse in the Champions Cup. Joseph created a sensational game-winning try in the 71s minute, chipping, re-gathering and jinking his way around three players.
