Jose Mourinho names world’s top three goalkeepers

Published 31 Comments

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes two of the three best goalkeepers in world football are currently plying their trade at Stamford Bridge - while the other one is Bayern Munich and Germany star, Manuel Neuer.

Speaking after Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night, in which Thibaut Courtois produced a Man of the Match display, Mourinho told reporters that the Blues’ current first-choice ‘keeper and back-up Petr Cech were in the top three along with Neuer.

But the revered Portuguese coach could find no room for Manchester United’s David de Gea, who has been arguably the standout goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.

Courtois sensational against Liverpool

Courtois, who helped Atletico Madrid win their first La Liga title since 1996 and reach the Champions League final while on loan at the Vicente Calderon last season, pulled off a string of magnificent saves to ensure Chelsea came away from Anfield with a draw.

Without the 22-year-old, Chelsea probably would have lost the match, leaving Brendan Rodgers’ side favourites to qualify for the Capital One Cup final ahead of next week’s semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Cech and Neuer

That Mourinho declared Courtois as one of the world’s best goalkeepers will come as no surprise, while his decision to name Cech may have been a ploy to keep the veteran Czech Republic star sweet.

Mourinho is keen to keep both Courtois and Cech at Stamford Bridge, but it seems likely that the latter will leave Chelsea if not this month then in the summer.

Few would argue against Mourinho’s decision to name Neuer as one of the world’s top three goalkeepers - the Germany international came third in the 2014 Ballon d’Or voting - but many would claim, particularly those of a Manchester United persuasion, that De Gea now ranks amongst the world’s elite.

De Gea snubbed

The Spaniard, whose future is currently the subject of intense speculation, has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid. The reigning European champions are on the hunt for a long-term replacement for Iker Casillas - and De Gea fits the bill.
