Arsenal forward Joel Campbell has agreed a deal to join Villarreal on loan this season, no doubt a consequence of ongoing negotiations between the two clubs concerning a £15 million deal for Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista.
That is according to a journalist from his native Costa Rica, with Juan Carlos Aguero reporting that the striker is now just waiting to put pen to paper on a contract extension with Arsenal before going back to La Liga in search of regular first-team football.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has only used the 22-year-old four times in the Premier League this term, but clearly still feels he has a long-term future at the Emirates despite that relative snub.
Third forward on his way out of Arsenal
Aguero used a Twitter account that is indeed followed by Campbell himself to report the news this afternoon, insisting that there's plenty of weight to stories that Campbell is ready to go out on loan for the fourth time since signing for the Gunners way back in 2011.
Wenger has already allowed fringe forwards in Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo to leave on loan this month, with both men in desperate need of more regular playing time.
One in, one out at Arsenal this weekend
Campbell also falls into that category and could help Wenger finally get a centre-back he's been hoping to sign for more than six months, with Paulista viewed as the man to finally provide much-needed cover for Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in central defence.
Villarreal are reluctant to let Paulista leave but would gladly take an attacking option in Campbell to sweeten the deal, if the Gunners are looking to haggle on the Brazilian defender's £15m asking price.
Expect this situation to be resolved over the next 48 hours, with Paulista left out of Villarreal's squad to face Levante this weekend in order to get his future sorted.
