Right about now is a good time to be an Arsenal fan, with the Gunners having survived a giant-killing FA Cup weekend and virtually sealed the deal with regards to capturing the signature of Villarreal star Gabriel Paulista.
Yet with the Brazilian having all but been officially presented at the Emirates Stadium Arsene Wenger has already turned his attentions to other transfer matters, and there’s more than one story in today’s gossip column that could cause a stir.
We start with the sensational rumour that Arsenal are one of a host of clubs tracking Barcelona star Sergio Busquets, with his club yet to agree an extension to his current contract.
The Spanish midfielder, a product of the fabled La Masia academy, could be offered a long-term deal by the Catalan giants, but if negotiations don’t go to plan then there’s a number of big Premier League club hovering on the periphery waiting to swoop.
One of those clubs is Arsenal, who are still in the market for a player to help protect their back four. Whilst Busquets may be the most notable name linked with the position he is also the most unpractical target given his importance to Luis Enrique’s side and his rapport with the Barcelona fans. As of yet there’s been no mention of a fee, but it’s sure to be typically high in this case.
Next up there’s more news tying the Gunners to Spain, this time in the form of Real Madrid star Karim Benzema. The France international could well be on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu when the current campaign ends, with it being said that his £40 million departure would be consented to by Los Blancos chiefs.
Reports suggest that Arsenal are in the race to sign him as they look to ensure they can challenge for major silverware once more next season, and with Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud never having looked like being 20 goal-a-season strikers, it could be the difference maker with regards to their ambitions of winning the Premier League.
Last but not least it’s goodbye Joel Campbell… for now at least. The Costa Rica international was pictured yesterday onboard a Ryanair flight as he flew to Spain to put pen to paper on a short term deal with Villarreal. He’ll stay with the Yellow Submarine until the summer.
