This week on NXT the tournament to crown the new number one contender for the NXT Championship tournament continued with Baron Corbin taking on Bull Dempsey and Adrian also in action, taking on Tyson Kidd.

With only two weeks left until NXT Takeover, we see a tense contract signing between Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens whilst The Lucha Dragons put their NXT Tag Team Championships on the line against the team of Wesley Blake and Buddy Murphy.

NEW CHAMPIONS

The Lucha Dragons kicked off this week’s episode of NXT as they attempted to successfully retain their NXT Tag Team Championships, taking on the team of Wesley Blake and Buddy Murphy after the latter managed to defeat The Vaudevillians and book themselves this huge championship match.

Blake and Murphy are treated to some new, catchy entrance music along with the full introductions so it was never going to be a squash match. Sin Cara and Wesley Blake kicked things off with Blake getting the upper hand, slamming Sin Cara into the corner but it was short-lived as Sin Cara responded with a double springboard wrist-drag.

The challengers remained aggressive throughout the match, Murphy hit an impressive dropkick for only a two count before Blake locked in a chinlock on Sin Cara and finally tagged in Kalisto. The pace of the match finally picked up as he hit a sunset bomb on Buddy Murphy for a two count before all four men start to brawl. Wesley Blake countered Sin Cara’s attempt at a springboard but Sin Cara managed to tag in Kalisto and it all looked to be over as he hit Murphy with the Salida Del Sol, but Buddy Murphy was the legal man and rolled up Kalisto and picked up the win.

We have new NXT Tag Team Champions!

We see a recap of Bayley turning on Charlotte last week, and William Regal announcing the NXT Women’s Championship at Takeover in a Fatal 4 Way match.

Backstage we see Charlotte laying into Bayley verbally, but Bayley tells her that she’s probably been too nice to the champion. Bayley is using Sami Zayna as inspiration, and says she saw what he did when he got more serious and now it’s her turn to do the same. Charlotte isn’t too worried though, telling Bayley she won’t even make it to Takeover if she pulls a similar stunt again.

Tyler Breeze – who was eliminated in the NXT Championship number one contender’s tournament last week by Hideo Itami – says he’s going to watch the remainder of the tournament very carefully.

NEVILLE ADVANCES

Tyson Kidd taking on Adrian Neville next and the fans are genuinely split between the two, great to see Tyson Kidd finally getting a superb reaction from the crowd. The longest match of the night was also the best, as expected Tyson Kidd controlled most of the match but both superstars put on an impressive showing with incredible high-flying moves from all four corners of the ring.

Towards the end Tyson Kidd hit a fisherman’s neckbreaker on Neville for only a two but he somehow flipped out of a release German Suplex and hit a Batista Bomb – and the crowd responded with an appropriate chant in ‘Better than Batista’ – but it was only for a two count.

Adrian Neville went to the outside but Kidd hit him with a hard dropkick to send him to the floor. Back inside the ring, Kidd attempted to lock in the Sharpshooter but was unable to to do so, allowing Neville to hit a kick on Kidd’s head, which was quite similar to Sami Zayn’s Helluva Kick, and he followed it up with the Red Arrow for the impressive victory.

After the match, Adrian Neville tells the NXT Universe that he’s more than ready to face either Baron Corbin or Bull Dempsey, and the fans are intrigued at a Neville and Corbin match-up.

Before the divas match can begin, Becky Lynch implied that she would turn on her partner, Sasha Banks if it meant becoming the new NXT Women’s Champion; we’ll find out in two weeks at Takeover just what happens between the four divas.

Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake are backstage with their new titles and they are ecstatic, they offer The Lucha Dragons a rematch anywhere, anytime. It looks as if we could see a rematch at Takeover.

Divas tag team action next with Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks taking on Bayley and Charlotte with tension between both teams quite high. A back and forth match with both teams getting a lot of offence in before the championship match in two weeks so it was good to see no team looking weaker than the other.

Charlotte locked in the Figure Four on Banks but Becky Lynch managed to break it up, Banks followed it up with the Bankrupt allowing Bayley to come into the ring but she accidentally hit her partner in the process. Charlotte and Bayley then begin to fight each other as Lynch and Banks joined in, finishing the match in a double disqualification.

Hideo Itami approaches Finn Balor from behind and tells him that he brought him to the company, and he’ll take him out too if it means he has to advance in the tournament.

Emma is back and says that things haven’t gone her way since she left NXT, so next week she’ll be back to take on Carmella.

CONTRACT SIGNING

Before the final segment, we see the last of the four quarter-final match-ups between Baron Corbin and Bull Dempsey, with the winner advancing to face Adrian Neville. Baron Corbin sends Dempsey into the corner and runs over him with a shoulder. Dempsey is on the floor but Corbin doesn’t let up, sending Dempsey back into the ring and hitting the corner splash followed by the End of Days for the victory in just over 90 seconds.

After the match, Baron Corbin says he’s taken one more step to becoming NXT Champion and next week Adrian Neville takes a step closer to being erased. Bull Dempsey is still here and threatens to knock his teeth out as Corbin walks away.

Time for the contract signing as Sami Zayn is first out to the ring but William Regal is quite hesitant to bring Kevin Owens. But Owens does come down and Zayn looks furious, Regal says this signing won’t be like any other contract signing in the WWE because if they lay a hand on each other he’ll cancel the match. Sami signs the contract as the fans chant for him but Owens looks straight at Zayn and not at the contract. Sami asks if Kevin Owens is only going to stare at him or if Owens is going to explain why. Kevin Owens doesn’t move and Sami Zayn says he’ll talk about the last 12 years.

Sami says they’ve fought against each other so maybe he should’ve seen this coming, the truth is that he didn’t see it coming and least of all at R Evolution when they both arrived. But Sami doesn’t care anymore, he’s going to beat him at Takeover. But we finally find out why Kevin Owens isn’t signing the contract, he doesn’t like the fact that their match is a non-title match.

Kevin Owens says whatever he did at R Evolution was business because he’ll fight anyone for the correct prize. He says the championship means more money and a better life for himself and his family so he won’t be signing until it’s a championship match. William Regal isn’t a fan of Kevin Owens’ last minute demands but Sami doesn’t care either way, he says he wants the title match because he knows Kevin Owens won’t compete if he doesn’t get what he wants. William Regal adds something on the contract as Sami Zayn signs once more, Kevin Owens finally signs and throws the pen at Sami to end the show with the NXT Championship match between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn at Takeover now official; and it takes place in under two weeks.
