Manchester United supporters will have woken up this morning dreaming of a potential marquee signing arriving at Old Trafford on transfer deadline day, despite the fact Louis van Gaal has already confirmed the Red Devils have no plans to invest in any new players in the mid-season window.
After securing the services of former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on an 18-month contract, the Dutch coach appears happy that the squad he's assembled is capable of achieving the primary target set at the start of the campaign by qualifying for the Champions League via a top four finish in the Premier League.
With over £150 million spent on six new players during the summer it's understandable if senior club chiefs are reluctant to shell out even more money this month, especially as the most recent arrivals are only now just starting to find their feet at the Theatre of Dreams.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Saturday, Van Gaal warned fans not to expect the same kind of excitement they experienced last summer after suggesting that the only business being completed would be current players heading out of Old Trafford.
"I don't think it [the January window] is favourable for the league because it's a little bit unfair," he explained. "You start a league and then you change your team – the richer clubs can do that and it's not fair for other clubs.

"But that's the rule and you can take benefit of it. We are doing nothing – that I have already said – but I read every day that I or Manchester United are interested in other players.
"We only have Victor Valdes [as a January signing]. We gave him a chance. We are only selling players, not buying them."
However, the surprise deadline day acquisition of Colombian striker Radamel Falcao - who joined the club from AS Monaco on a season-long loan back in September - will give more imaginative Manchester United fans reason enough to hold out hope for another big-money buy being announced before tonight's cutoff point.
