Bolton Wanderers manager Neil Lennon has revealed that Manchester United’s surprise deadline day loan signing Andy Kellett thought it was a joke after being told the Red Devils wanted him.
United snapped up the 21-year-old defender on a loan deal, with Saidy Janko moving in the opposite direction, and Lennon said that player thought he was heading back on loan to Plymouth Argyle - and was left stunned to find out he was off to Manchester United instead.
"He thought he was going to Plymouth and I said, 'sorry Andy, you're not going to Plymouth - you're going to Man United," Lennon was quoted as saying by the Mirror. "He surprised to say the least. He rang his dad, who had to sit down for a while to take it all in.
"Funnily enough, he had his mate with him and I said to bring him in. This was about half ten last night and his mate walks in with a Man United tracksuit on!
"But the deal is done and Andy will be at Carrington today."
Darren Fletcher: United wanted to keep me
Meanwhile, Darren Fletcher has confirmed that Manchester United wanted him to stay at Old Trafford.
The Scotland international completed a late deadline-day switch to West Brom with minutes left before the window shut and is looking forward to beginning the next chapter of his career at the Hawthorns.
Fletcher has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Baggies - with the option for another 12 months - and insists he leaves Old Trafford with a smile on his face.
"It feels great. This is a fantastic new challenge for me in my career,” Fletcher told West Brom’s official website. "I've spent my career at Manchester United and it's all I've ever known.
"But I felt it was the right time to move and I'm not sentimental about doing that - I have great memories obviously, but I'm now a West Bromwich Albion player and I cannot wait to get going.”
Jesse Lingard signs new deal
And finally, amongst all the transfer news last night it was confirmed that Jesse Lingard has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester United.
The attacking midfielder put pen-to-paper on the new deal before completing a loan move to Championship promotion hopefuls Derby County.
The 22-year-old will spend the rest of the season on loan with the Rams before reporting back for pre-season training with Manchester United in the summer.
