The WWE and Rey Mysterio appear destined to part ways in the coming weeks, and, just days after reports surfaced suggesting the popular Superstar had been served papers to make his exit official, it looks like the higher ups have already identified the man to replace him.
Part of what made Mysterio so successful in the WWE was his mask gimmick, with the Mexican star's appearance setting him apart from his North American peers.
Now, with his exit looming, Wrestling Inc is reporting that the WWE are extremely keen on finding a new "masked wrestler" and have identified fellow Latin American star 'The Laredo Kid' as the man to fill that gap.
The current AAA (Asistencia Asesoría y Administración) wrestler impressed WWE employees at a recent tryout in Texas and has been invited back again in April with officials reportedly very keen on bringing him into the WWE ranks.
Laredo Kid would of course begin life in NXT but, with 10 years of experience in AAA, he is far from a raw talent.
As far back as 2007 he was ranked 274th on the PWI 500 list of the world's best wrestlers.
AAA was where Rey Mysterio began his pro wrestling career and, like the veteran, The Laredo Kid would likely have to eventually reveal his identity - which is a secret at present as is Mexican wrestling custom - should he move to WWE.
With Rey Mysterio looking ever more likely never to step foot in a WWE ring again there is a void to fill for sure.
Whether The Laredo Kid can be the man to do it remains to be seen but clearly, with Mysterio now 40-years-old and apparently refusing opportunities for in-ring work in WWE, it makes sense that the powers that be are working hard on finding a potential replacement.
Who knows, there could be another masked wrestler walking away with the Royal Rumble come 2016 should things go to plan.
