Manchester United could use Belgian winger Adnan Januzaj as a makeweight in a deal to sign Everton right-back Seamus Coleman or Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Marquinhos this summer.
This is according to the Manchester Evening News, who claim Januzaj has been told to prove himself at United between now and the end of the season by Louis van Gaal.
Should Januzaj fail to convince Van Gaal then the 20-year-old could be used in a deal to sign either Coleman or Marquinhos. Everton and PSG were both linked with Januzaj last month, but Van Gaal ruled out the prospect of the winger leaving on loan.
Januzaj admits struggles under Van Gaal
Januzaj admitted this week that adapting to Van Gaal’s system has been difficult this season. The Belgium international conceded that he finds it difficult playing at wing-back because of the defensive responsibilities that come with playing in that position, and reiterated that he prefers to play in the No. 10 role or out wide.
Manchester United’s current No. 11 has made just six starts this season, but has been selected for two of Van Gaal’s three previous starting line-ups. The former Anderlecht starlet missed Tuesday’sFA Cup fourth round replay against Cambridge United through injury.
A player blessed with remarkable natural poise, balance and skill, the technically-gifted Januzaj is rated highly by coaches at Old Trafford and has even been compared to football legend Johan Cruyff.
Coleman and Marquinhos
Should Manchester United decide to sell Januzaj, who has three years left on his current contract, they would have no shortage of potential suitors making offers.
But rather than selling for cash, Manchester United may use the interest in Januzaj to help them land one of their key transfer targets.
Coleman has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent right-backs over recent seasons and might be regarded by Van Gaal as an upgrade on Manchester United’s current right-sided full-back, Rafael.
Marquinhos would command a significantly higher transfer fee; it was reported last month than PSG had slapped an astronomical £112 million asking price on the Brazilian central defender.
PSG’s interest in Januzaj in no secret, however, and the Ligue 1 champions may be open to negotiations regarding the sale of Marquinhos this summer if it means the Manchester United No. 11 completing a move to the Parc des Princes as part of the deal.
