Manchester United's belief that they will sign German international Mats Hummels has been strengthened after the Borussia Dortmund man was involved in dramatic scenes at the Westfalenstadion last night, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Hummels featured in Dortmund's 1-0 home defeat to Augsburg last night, leaving Jurgen Klopp's side bottom of the Bundesliga table.
And, after the clash, Hummels, alongside goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, attempted to confront fans, who were left angry after watching their side suffer yet another defeat.
Hummels, though, has insisted that he's determined to battle for survival in Germany's elite division, insisting that the club must fight over the course of the next 15 games.
After last night's loss, Hummels told reporters: "We’re always chasing games,” he said. “What’s missing is us taking the lead so that we can then sit back and play on the counter.
“We’re all aware that we’ve got to fight in the next 15 games. Playing attractive football will just be a bonus, yet we are still expected to play that kind of football.
“We know that 98 per cent will be about fighting, the other two will be about loosening up so that we start making the right decisions in the final third.”
Hummels, then, will no doubt be giving it his all as he goes about keeping Dortmund in the Bundesliga, but it appears that Manchester United could make a move for his services in the upcoming transfer window.
In fact, the same report from the Manchester Evening News has revealed that Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is planning a £35 million swoop for his signature, as he goes about improving the Red Devils' back-line.
There's no doubt about it, despite tightening up of late, United have struggled in the defensive department, with the club looking extremely vulnerable.
The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans have all failed to maintain their fitness and hit top form throughout the course of the season, but it remains to be seen as to whether Manchester United can pull off a deal for Hummels in the near future.
