With the situation regarding his future growing ever more precarious, Raphael Varane was recently involved in a meeting with Real Madrid chiefs to clarify his position at the club.
According to French newspaper Le 10 Sport, citing publication L’Equipe, the player, who has been heavily linked with moves to both Manchester United and Chelsea, and his agent discussed his future with Florentino Perez and others, and the subject of him talking to external parties was even mentioned.
Though that’s good news for Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, who both have reasons to want to embed Varane in the heart of their defence, the same report suggests that Varane was handed assurances by Perez that he is set to become a pivotal player in the future, which could lay waste to any chance of him leaving the Santiago Bernabeu in the near future.
Having arrived during the stewardship of Jose Mourinho from RC Lens, Varane quickly made an impression in the Spanish capital, and his ability as a ball-playing defender gave him a reputation as one to watch.
Possibility of departure
However under Carlo Ancelotti the youngster has been somewhat stifled behind Sergio Ramos and Pepe, prompting speculation that he could move in search of regular game-time.
With United’s defence having come under intense scrutiny this season - the likes of Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones have hardly impressed - Van Gaal is on the look out for options this summer, and so will certainly move for Varane if it looks like he’s at all available.
Meanwhile Mourinho has not only worked with him before but holds him in very high regard, and with John Terry heading for the end of his career a new centre-back would be a smart acquisition.
