Liverpool now lead the race to sign Manchester United defender target Simon Kjaer as Italian giants Juventus aren't willing to meet his £7.5 million price-tag, according to the Express.
The Denmark international, who is currently plying his trade in France for Lille, is recognised as one of the standout defenders in Ligue 1, so it's not entirely surprising that the likes of Liverpool and Co. are interested in his signature.
However, with Juventus seemingly interested in the player's services, there could be quite the transfer battle between some of Europe's biggest clubs this summer.
The report from the Express has claimed that Liverpool are now in pole position to bring the former Wolfsburg man to England, but it remains to be seen as to whether the Merseyside outfit step up their interest in him anytime soon.
Previous comments from Kjaer certainly boost Liverpool in their pursuit of him, as in 2014, he told reporters: "It's not a secret that my family are Liverpool fans, and a move to Liverpool would make my family happy.
"But they support me more than they support anything else, so they are happy where ever I go - as long as I am happy."
Clubs in need
There's no doubt about it, Liverpool are in need of improvement in the defensive department. The Reds have looked extremely vulnerable in the back-line throughout the course of the campaign, with the club having conceded 27 goals in their 24 league games this term.
In truth, Dejan Lovren, who was signed in a big-money deal from Southampton this past summer, has failed to prove his credentials at the club, while a number of his teammates have struggled to find consistency.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are also in need of improvement at the back, with the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans failing to maintain their fitness throughout the season so far.
Despite the fact that United have improved at the back over the course of the last few weeks, there are still concerns over a number of their defensive players, but it's far from certain as to whether Van Gaal will act this summer.
The future of Kjaer, then, remains uncertain, but he could yet complete a move to England's elite division.
