During Monday Night Raw it was noted that John Cena had picked up an eye injury during an altercation with Rusev.
The WWE Superstar was hit with a surprise attack by Rusev while on the entrance ramp and Michael Cole later described that Cena had suffered a scratched cornea.
The issue - whether real or in fact kayfabe - had many questioning whether the Cena-Rusev match up slated for the upcoming Fasltlane PPV would go ahead and now WWE's Dr. Chris Amann has shed light on the situation.
"John Cena had been (competing during) last weekend's Live Events when he sustained a corneal abrasion during his Live Event matches," the doctor said via WWE.com.
"This evening during the attack by Rusev, John Cena's injuries were exacerbated. As mentioned, those injuries were a scratches cornea and a ruptured blood vessel."

With Fastlane just 12 days away it was speculated Cena could struggle to take his place in the event.
Amann though moved to ease any such worries.
"We're going to do periodic eye exams to make sure the scratch on his cornea is healing and he will be ready for WWE Fastlane."
Whether John Cena will be in action before the PPV remains in question and it wouldn't be surprising to see WWE keep their top man out of the ring until the primetime showdown with the man who has exacerbated the injury.
The eye concern will though surely now become integral to his match up with Rusev come Fastlane. Will John Cena appear hindered by the issue, and will the Russian heel target it during the fight.
Meanwhile John Cena took to Twitter to address WWE fans directly:
Come Fastlane, Cena will face off against Rusev for the United States Championship.
That match up forms part of the undercard for a main event which pits recent Royal Rumble champion Roman Reigns against fan favorite Daniel Bryan.
The other title on the line is the WWE Divas Championship. The FedExForum audience will see Nikki Bella defend her crown against Paige.
