Real Madrid will fine James Rodriguez and in-demand Chelsea target Sami Khedira for attending Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent birthday party.
This is according to Spanish newspaper Sport, who claim the Real Madrid duo will receive hefty fines for attending Ronaldo’s birthday bash while injured.
The Spanish giants were already irritated that some members of the squad were out celebrating following the club’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to local rivals Atletico Madrid - but it’s James and Khedira who will reportedly “pay the fine for everyone”.
Players ordered to rest
James was ordered to take 72 hours of rest after being operated on following a metatarsal break - yet the party was less than 48 hours later - while Khedira had been forced to limp off the pitch hours earlier with a muscle injury in his thigh which will keep him out of action for three weeks.
A report in the Express earlier today cited sources in Spain as revealing that Khedira may have played his final match for Real Madrid following his latest injury.
Interest in Khedira is high
The reigning European champions have reportedly lost patience with the German World Cup winner, who is understood to be on the radar of Bayern Munich.
Manchester United and Chelsea, along with Arsenal, have also been linked with the 27-year-old holding midfielder in recent months.
Khedira’s current Real Madrid contract expires at the end of the season, and the player looks set to leave the Bernabeu following five years with Los Blancos.
He joined Real Madrid in 2010 following his impressive displays at the World Cup finals in South Africa while contracted to Stuttgart and went on to establish himself as a key player for the Spanish club.
But his status in the Real Madrid squad has waned following two injury-hit seasons - and he now finds himself behind the likes of Isco, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in the pecking order.
A move to either Bayern Munich or the Premier League might be exactly what the Germany international requires at this stage in his career.
Arsenal recently handed revitalised holding midfielder Francis Coquelin a new contract, but manager Arsene Wenger is unlikely to pass up the opportunity to sign Khedira - one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders.
Jose Mourinho worked with Khedira and is interested in reuniting at Chelsea, while Manchester United are also on the hunt for a new midfielder and have been linked again today with a move for AC Milan’s Nigel de Jong.
