There's no getting away from the fact that Manchester United have been woeful this season. That may sound a fairly harsh statement considering they currently sit in third place in the Premier League table, but their performances have been dire.
And Louis van Gaal has to take the blame. Since being appointed manager of Manchester United in May of last year, the enigmatic Dutchman has failed to really put a team together. Yes, he has been able to secure results, but there's something not quite right about it all.
And one man who must be frustrated about the whole dilemma is Spaniard Ander Herrera. The midfield ace purchased from Athletic Club for a rather large fee this past summer, has endured a torrid opening to his Manchester United career.
Injuries, of course, haven't helped his cause, but he's been fit for some time now...and he's not been handed his chance to shine. Why? Only Van Gaal knows.
The Dutchman won't admit it, but it seems like he has something against the struggling 25-year-old. Perhaps it's that Herrera was targeted long before his arrival. We all knew that David Moyes - the man Van Gaal replaced - was after Herrera. Could that really have something to do with it?

Why did Van Gaal even sanction a move for Herrera? This, of course, is just speculation, and it's probably something that no one will get to the bottom of anytime soon. But surely he deserves a chance: a run of games to prove his credentials.
Don't get me wrong, Wayne Rooney is a world-class striker and he is a world class No.10...but he is not a world class midfielder. The Manchester United captain is, without a doubt, a solid central-midfielder, but he's by no means a top midfield player.
And picking Rooney in front of Herrera (in midfield) should insult the Spaniard. There is no way that Rooney is a better midfield player than Herrera. No way.
Rooney is, however, the club's captain, so it's understandable why Van Gaal wants to find a place for him, but it shouldn't be in place of the club's extremely talented and dynamic Spanish star.
Of course, every Manchester United fan will have an opinion on who should start for the club. But surely removing either of Robin van Persie or Radamel Falcao out of the starting XI and slotting Herrera into the team would be the right thing to do.
Rooney, then, could star in his favoured No.10 role, and United would have a proper midfield at their disposal. Surely a duo of Hererra and Blind would work as a pairing.
As it stands, Manchester United are not a team, but Herrera can be the making of exactly that. Van Gaal just has to start afresh with arguably the best midfield player at the club.
