Manchester United target Diego Godin is one of the world's best defenders, according to the club's former striker Diego Forlan.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Forlan, who has played alongside Godin at international level, has hailed his compatriot, insisting that he's good enough to play for any team in the world.
Best in 2014
In fact, Forlan has insisted that Godin was the standout defender of 2014 despite not being named in the FIFPro World XI Team of the Year.
Writing in his column for the National, Forlan stated: "My compatriot Diego Godin is one of the best defenders in the world, good enough to play for any team in any league.
"In 2014, he had a better year than any other defender. He scored the goal in Camp Nou against Barcelona that won Atletico Madrid the league title on the final day.
"He scored in the UEFA Champions League final and very nearly won the European Cup.
"At the World Cup, he scored for Uruguay against Italy to take us into the knockout stages – with his neck.
"Was there a better central defensive partnership in club football than Godin and the Brazilian Miranda last season? Yet he was not named in the Fifa FIFPro World XI team of the year."
Manchester United interest
Godin, of course, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United of late, with the Red Devils clearly in need of recruitment at the back.
It's certainly expected that United boss Louis van Gaal will look to add to his back-line in the near future, but it remains to be seen as to whether he will step up his interest in the La Liga star anytime soon.
The likes of Mats Hummels have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with another summer of spending expected at the club.
There's no doubt about it, Godin would prove quite the coup for the Red Devils as they look to improve in the defensive department. Not only would the Uruguayan provide great experience at the back, he would also tighten up the club's back-line.
With so many of United's defenders struggling to maintain their fitness and hit top form, Louis van Gaal should act sooner rather than later in an attempt to bring the Atletico ace to English soil.
