Romelu Lukaku has stated that he wants to leave Everton and join “a top club”.
Lukaku’s comments are unlikely to go down well with Everton’s hierarchy and fans as the Merseyside club broke their transfer record when they paid £28 million for the former Chelsea striker in the summer transfer window.
The Belgian has failed to replicate his form of last season, when he was on loan at the Everton, and has only scored seven goals so far during their league campaign.
Lukaku’s comments came after Everton’s match with his former club Chelsea, during which he failed to score at a crucial point in the game.
The striker was presented with a golden chance inside the six-yard box but Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech, did well to keep it out. In truth it was an opportunity that Lukaku would probably have buried last season.
Lukaku wants to play for a 'top club' again
“It was brilliant to play at Chelsea and I had a good reception,” Lukaku told The Sun. “They know I’m a good player but that I want to develop so I can eventually get back to playing for a club like Chelsea."
Despite praising his former club, Lukaku went on to state that he has no desire to join Chelsea and that he would like to play for another top club again.
“I don’t have a secret ambition to rejoin — there are other clubs in the world," he added. "I just want to grow as a player and eventually arrive at a top club again.”
Martinez unlikely to be impressed with forward
It remains to be seen what the Everton manager, Roberto Martinez, will make of his forward’s statement, but it is unlikely to have gone down well with the Spaniard.
Lukaku should be working hard to rediscover last season’s form, rather antagonising a club that gave him his chance to shine in the Premier League.
