Goalkeeper – David De Gea
This has to be the simplest choice in the United team. David De Gea has been head and shoulders above the rest of this team mates this season and in a number of games has come to United’s rescue with crucial saves to help them win important games. One of De Gea’s best performances this season came against Liverpool at Old Trafford when on a number of occasions denied Liverpool what looked like clear goal scoring chances.
Right back – Rafael
When you hear about United’s defensive problems everyone talks about the problem at centre back but United’s real problem is at right back. Even though Rafael isn’t a long term solution to this problem he is the only first team player at the club for who this is his natural position. So until the summer when United can look at a replacement he can fill in to allow for United to play a 4-4-2 formation.
Centre backs – Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo
If Jones and Rojo can keep injury free and play together for a prolonged period of time, then they could develop a really strong partnership. Both players have a had a frustrating season through injury. Both players are still pretty young and have time to develop into a good defensive pairing together that could be first choice at Old Trafford years to come.
Left Back – Luke Shaw
Shaw is another player whose season has been hit by injury and by playing one week as a wing back and the next week as a left back. Shaw earned his big money move to United by playing as a left back so that is where he should be playing. He has the ability to get forward and provide good deliveries into the box and get back and do his job defensively. United do have options at left back but Shaw is their best and therefore that’s where he should play.
Right wing – Antonio Valencia
Valencia’s season is being wasted playing as a wing back or as a right back. Due to United’s lack of options in the right back area Valencia has been stuck there too many times in recent games. Valencia is at his best when he is playing out wide on the right taking people on and running at defences. Covering every now and again at right back is OK but if Valencia is going to be part of Van Gaal’s plans then he needs to get him back out on the right.
Centre Midfield – Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick
Another position where United have had problems for a long time is in the centre of their midfield. United just can’t find a replacement for Paul Scholes and foolishly let Paul Pogba leave. However United do have good players in this area. United look like a much better team when Michael Carrick is in the side and I am sure he is in most United fans' starting eleven. Despite Daley Blind being a very talented player, Ander Herrera just has to play more. United fans are crying out for him to start after seeing him glimpses of just what he can do.
Left wing – Angel Di Maria
It would be pretty hard for Van Gaal to leave Di Maria out of his side. Di Maria has lost a bit of form from the start of the season due to injury and again playing out of position. However, as they say, form is temporary and class is permanent, and Di Maria is full of class. When Di Maria is playing out wide on the left and running at players that is when he is one of the best players on the planet and the sooner Van Gaal plays him there the better for the entire team.
Strikers – Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie
Rooney is the captain so will play but surely it won’t be long until he is back playing up front. Rooney is a victim off his own success in the fact that he has the quality to play in midfield. But you don’t become one of your club and countries best goal scores of all time by playing as a defensive midfielder. As for Van Persie he is a proven goal scorer in the Premier League and can score all types of goals. The partnerships of Rooney and Van Persie is one that works and they have shown that on more than one occasion.
Substitutes – Victor Valdes, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Ashley Young, Juan Mata, James
Wilson, Radamel Falcao
Despite how good the likes of Daley Blind and Juan Mata are, United’s best formation doesn’t accommodate their best positions and therefore they will have to be on the
bench. As for Falcao he is still a top player but a proven partnership of Rooney and Van Persie is simply too good to try and break.
