Manchester United players were out in force on social media yesterday, posting a variety of soppy Valentine's Day messages to their loyal partners to mark the annual celebration.

Red Devils captain Wayne Rooney paid tribute to his wife Coleen after taking advantage of a rare Saturday off owing to this weekend's FA Cup fifth round schedule.

Louis van Gaal's side take on League One outfit Preston North End at Deepdale on Monday evening, and the Dutch coach gave his first-team squad a day's rest to spend with loved ones on February 14.

Radamel Falcao seized the opportunity to forget about his footballing troubles this season by taking a day trip with his wife to London - perhaps with a view to finding his next club upon the expiry of his loan deal this summer?

Other Instagram uploads saw fellow striker Robin van Persie treating his wife to a nice meal, while summer signings Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo posted public displays of affection of their own.

Manchester United supporters will be hoping that the players' short break from their gruelling schedule will benefit them when they run out in Lancashire tomorrow evening, as they look to lay their hands on at least one trophy in Van Gaal's first season as manager.

A top four finish in the Premier League will also be a minimum requirement for the Red Devils, as they look to get back involved in the Champions League from next season onwards.
