CAF Champions League: Preliminary round first-leg results

The Africa Cup of Nations is over in Equatorial Guinea and now it is all about  the thrills and excitement of the CAF Champions League, which saw the first leg matches of the preliminary round kick off across the continent  last weekend.

Morocco's Raja Casablanca produced a statement of intent in their opening match, mercilessly thumping Congolese side Diables Noirs by 4-0.

Goals from Ivorian Kouko Guehi, Nigerian Christian Osaguona, Adil Karrouchy and Jbira were enough for Jose Romao's  side and has put the Moroccan club in pole position to qualify with the second-leg coming off on 27 February in Brazzavile.

Raja Casablanca will be seeking to win their fourth Champions league title in their sixteenth time of asking since the 1999 triumph.

In Algiers, 2005 runners-up USM Algiers beat Foullah Edifice of Chad by 2-0 and Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa were also 2-1 home victors over Botswana's Township Rollers.

Tournament looks wide open

Nigeria's Enyimba, who won double titles in 2003 and 2004 won comfortably at home over Buffles de Borgou. Coach Kadiri Ikhana, who won the 2003 title with Enyimba, is back at the club and has targeted winning the continental title once gain with the Nigerian giants.

Ghanaian champions Asante Kotoko have been handed a bye, as Sierra Leone side East End Lions pulled out of the competition citing financial constraint.
