After Manchester United's win over Preston in the FA Cup on Monday, Wayne Rooney was challenged to the unlikeliest of contests.

WWE superstar Wade Barrett, from Preston and a huge fan of the football team, challenged Rooney to a star studded Wrestlemania tag team match after the Red Devils moved into the quarter-finals.

Manchester United overcame Preston 3-1 at Deepdale with Rooney completing the scoring having won a dubious penalty, which many believe was awarded as a result of a dive from the England captain.

Barrett took exception to Rooney hitting the ground easily and tweeted the 29-year-old to offer some friendly encouragement that he ought to perhaps consider staying on his feet more often.

After Rooney jokingly threatened to get WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin out of retirement to deal with Barrett, 'Bad News' suggested he'd get Preston North End bruiser Kevin Davis to have his back.

He then told his boss Vince McMahon to book it for Wrestlemania!

To make the whole exchange even more bizarre, Stone Cold himself then proceeded to get involved and had a pop at Rooney - his would-be partner - for deciding to undergo treatment to cure his baldness.
