Kevin Owens takes on Adrian Neville in the NXT main event

This week on NXT we witnessed the fallout from last week’s NXT Takeover event where Kevin Owens became the NXT Champion after a destructive performance against Sami Zayn.

Sasha Banks was crowned the new NXT Women’s Champion after defeating Charlotte, Bayley and Becky Lynch in a fatal four way match whilst Finn Balor is now on course for a championship match against Owens. Baron Corbin, Blake & Murphy and Hideo Itami also picked up wins at Takeover.

The show opened with a recap of the events that unfolded at Takeover: Rival before William Regal appears on screen and says that the championship can change hands by the referee’s decision to Owens’ title win still stands, but maintains that Kevin Owens doesn’t have the authority because he’s won the championship so Regal announces the night’s main event.

William Regal announces that Kevin Owens will take on Adrian Neville in a non-title match in the main event, because Neville hasn’t earned his title match it will remain a non-title match but he still earned his right to get revenge on the superstar who put him in hospital.

Kevin Owens is out next and the crowd are as vocal as ever, split between Owens and Zayn but he disregards the cheers and stays in his heel character. He says that people have issues with how he became the NXT Championship and those who are upset have no right to be angry at anything. This is because he hasn’t lied or pretended to be something he isn’t and as he’s always said he will fight anyone and everyone to make sure he gives his family a better life and that’s what he did last week.

He says who he defeated and the manner in which he did so is irrelevant because Sami Zayn is now in the past and that means he looks to the future and the future is Finn Balor. Kevin Owens is well aware that Finn Balor is the new number one contender for the NXT Championship so he tells Balor to go to William Regal to pick whichever date he wants for his championship match. But he has a warning for him, everything that happened to Sami Zayn at Takeover will happen to Finn Balor also as nobody is going to take the title from him.

The first match of the evening saw Elias Samson waiting in the ring for his opponent and the NXT fans erupted in cheers as Rhyno came out and hit the vicious Gore on Samson for a victory in just over 30 seconds.

Backstage, Finn Balor talks about what Kevin Owens had to say and holds a high opinion of himself as well. He says Owens likes to call himself a prize fighter and Balor also fights for a prize but before he can finish his sentence we see Rhyno enter the frame and the two stare off for a short while before Rhyno smirks and walks off.

Tag team action next as the Vaudevillians looked to get back into the title picture but Enzo Amore and Big Cass wanted their opportunity too. Amore was out supporting a new look, a blonde beard to support his handlebar moustache as the two verbally laid into the Vaudevillians.

Vaudevillians took control early on in the match as Aiden English got in an early cheap shot but Enzo ducked a clothesline and dived to tag in Big Cass. Big Cass took out both men and threw English into the corner and then Enzo is thrown on him before Cass hit the big boot for the big victory. After the match the tag team champions Blake & Murphy on screen and say that their win isn’t enough for a title match before flirting with Carmella as she pretended to throw up.

We hear from Adrian Neville, Bayley and Becky Lynch. Neville talks about how he can now be the hunter on NXT after being the hunted for a long time and now he wants revenge on Kevin Owens for putting him on a stretcher. Bayley remains positive despite falling short in her bid to become NXT Women’s Champion whilst Becky Lynch gave it her all but Bayley cost her the title, she’s happy that Charlotte lost and is happy that if anyone was to win, it’s Sasha Banks.

CJ Parker is out to the ring next looking angry and he talks about not being on Takeover and now he’s ending the show and taking it hostage. He starts to stick caution tape around the ring and we see the same technical difficulties we’ve been seeing for weeks and we finally get the debut of Solomon Crowe. He jumped over the barricade and took out Parker before telling the fans that we can now return to our regularly scheduled broadcast before exiting the ring through the crowd again.

Before the big main event we have the new Women’s Champion in action as Blue Pants is back on NXT who received a great reaction. But it doesn’t stop Sasha Banks from picking up a dominant win. Taking Blue Pants down and locking in the Bank Statement for the submission victory. After the match she tells the NXT Universe that it’s now her time.

We hear from the doctors who checked up on Sami Zayn as Zayn says he’ll be back on NXT stronger than ever.

Time for the main event with Kevin Owens taking on Adrian Neville in a fantastic, back and forth encounter. Kevin Owens was the more dominant out of the two in the match and played the role of the heel perfectly as he stepped on Neville’s head numerous times; a simple and effective heel manoeuvre. Neville continued to stay in the match with kicks and hit a springboard dropkick for a two count and as always Owens went to the outside to regroup. Neville hit an impressive dropkick through the ropes and then hit a 450 splash from the apron and then hit a couple of German suplex’ for a two count.

Owens followed it up with a huge clothesline and is unable to hit the cannonball as Neville this an impressive super kick. The fans continued to show their appreciation as Neville hit a reverse hurricarana and then Neville misses his Red Arrow in mid-air as Owens nails the popup powerbomb for the victory, the match was better than the Takeover main event last week.
