One of this season's most notable battles for a starting position has been between Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois. As we all know, Courtois has made the 'keepers position his own, displacing his veteran rival.

But it has been no easy task, as Jose Mourinho is never afraid to switch his 'keepers out for specific matches. Indeed, Courtois has justified his starting status in recent months, putting in enormous performances in in the biggest matches.

Courtois on top

Cech has been stellar this season, but Courtois continues to prove his worth when it matters. Versus Liverpool and PSG, Courtois single-handedly kept the opposition at bay, constantly thwarting the likes of Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Courtois' saves aren't just spectacular; they come when Chelsea cannot afford to concede goals. Against Leicester City, Courtois came up big, preventing David Nugent from giving Leicester the lead. Just a few minutes later, Costa put Chelsea ahead, and an air of relief spread across Stamford Bridge.

Additionally, Courtois' save versus Ibrahimovic in the recent 1-1 away draw against PSG preserved Chelsea's precious away goal and kept the tie finely balanced for the return leg at Stamford Bridge.

David De Gea will take continue to take the headlines for a struggling Manchester United with his unfathomable saves, but Courtois has proved to be a brick wall when his team needs him. The Belgium international has been pivotal to Chelsea's continued success, and his performances in the pivotal moments place him on a different level to that of De Gea.

At the young age of 22, Courtois has time on his side, yet he's already drawn comparisons the Bayern stalwart Manuel Neuer. The Bayern star has been crucial to his own team's success and is famed for his famous 'sweeper-keeper' style of play.

Although Courtois plays with a more conservative style, he deserves the plaudits for his team's glory this season. With time, he has the potential to become a Chelsea legend and one of the most-famed keepers of all time.

Currently biding his time in the shadows of the his more appraised teammates, Courtois' legendary moment will come and, when it does, he will receive the credit he truly deserves.
