Ambitious Sampdoria owner Massimo Ferrero is desperate to restore his team to former glories and is not afraid to set his sights high when it comes to pursuing players capable of transforming the Italian club.
Lionel Messi has been identified as the dream acquisition for Ferrero. That’s not really much of a surprise though, is it? One would imagine that most other owners share this lofty ambition, but Ferrero is the only one to have said it.
But do Sampdoria have an advantage over their rivals when it comes to Messi? Well, according to Ferrero, the Barcelona superstar is a fan of Sampdoria’s colours. Although he probably made that up.
“I want to be at the heart of a great Sampdoria again,” Ferrero told Sky Sports 24.
“The signing of my dreams? I am always aiming high and the dream signing would be Messi."

“I can only say that he likes Sampdoria's colours and that I am here to win things and not to count ants.”
But fear not, Barcelona fans. Sampdoria are not in the position to pursue a deal for Messi unless, of course, Ferrero has just found £184 million (his release clause) down the back of the sofa. But that is unlikely to be the case.
If not Messi, however, Ferrero has another established star in his sights, but one somewhat closer to home.
Paul Pogba is that player and Ferrero even joked he would be peppered to offer €100 million to sign the Frenchman from Juventus. Well, we assume it was a joke, anyway.
He said: “Pogba for 100 million? I'd buy him…
“Are we kidding? With this money Juventus would win another 20 titles!”
Sampdoria are actually enjoying a decent season and are in with an outside chance of clinching a spot in next season’s Champions League, with third-placed Napoli some seven points away.
But even if they are able to return to the hallowed European competition, which they reached the final of in 1992, there is no chance they will be adding players of the calibre of Messi or Pogba to their ranks.
Aim lower, chaps.
