Manchester United are considering a move for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski as Louis van Gaal searches for Radamel Falcao's replacement, reports The Mail.
As we are being constantly reminded, Falcao is only at Old Trafford on loan and has done anything but convince Van Gaal to pay the £45 million the make the deal permanent. The Colombian is likely to go back to AS Monaco this summer, leaving a gaping hole in Manchester United's front line.
Robin van Persie is not only the wrong side of 30, but is also showing the erratic form that Falcao is displaying. The only difference is that his £250,000-a-week contract has 18 months to run. With so much money available, the Old Trafford boss senses the need for a younger, better striker in the summer transfer window.
Sensing an opportunity
Lewandowski has hardly been a failure since swapping Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich in the summer, scoring 13 goals in all competitions so far. However, he was dropped for Bayern's 0-0 draw against Schalke 04 last week, leading to suggestions that all is not well between the Pole and Pep Guardiola.
Van Gaal obviously sense an opportunity to sign the 26-year-old and will be able to offer him a key role in the first team as well as huge wages. The Red Devils are ready to business for £30 million, according to the same report.
The reports linking Lewandowski with a move to Old Trafford is a natural move after Dietmar Hamann made big news by telling Manchester United to 'break the bank' the sign him.
“I think the same goes for Lewandowski because the way the team plays under Guardiola I don’t think it suits him," he told Sky Sports last week.
“If you look at Manchester United, I think they could do with a Lewandowski.
"He came to Bayern Munich on a free last year but if there was an opportunity to get him out I’d break the bank for him because I think he’s the best number nine in the world."
Does he fit in?
Not only are Manchester United the richest club in the Premier League but they are the only club in the top five with a serious need for a new striker. Once Falcao goes back, James Wilson and Van Persie will be the only front men. One is inexperienced and one seems to be fading away with age. Lewandowski is exactly the kind of signing Manchester United fans can begin to expect if this era of heavy spending continues.
