Zach Mettenberger says he's better than Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota

Tennessee Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger had some rather strong words for QB's in this year's draft: "be prepared to sit on the bench if you become a Titan."

Mettenberger said on Saturday that he believes if the Titans take either Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota with the team's No. 2 draft pick, he would be able to beat them out for the starting spot.

No Beating Zach

Mettenberger spoke highly of Winston and Mariota, the two top quarterbacks in this year's draft, saying that he could compete his heart out against them if they came in and backed himself to retain that starting jersey.

"They are obviously very talented guys," Mettenberger said, according to Bleacher Report. "...If they were here I think they would say the same thing: If we had to compete out there, I think I'd beat them out."

Taylor Lewan, Tennessee's first pick in last year's draft and the man charged with protecting Mettenberger at left tackle, likes Mettenberger's comments about winning the job.

"I think any person that doesn't say that is not going to be successful," the offensive tackle said. "There are only so many positions in the NFL you can be a part of. If another guy comes in that's a first-round pick or a second-round pick or a higher pick than you were, you either fold it up or you can take that adversity and thrive with it."

Mettenberger played in seven games for the Titans last season, starting six of them. Tennessee went 0-7 with the 23-year-old under center. He completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 1,412 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Trade the Pick?

Titan's general manager Ruston Webster said earlier this week that the team was happy with Mettenberger, but would evaluate both Winston and Mariota. He did not elaborate on how Tennessee would use its draft pick.

"We like Zach and I think Zach has the tools to play and start in the league," Webster said. "...and we have to do our due diligence all the way through. Zach knows we are going to do that, and this is just kind of part of it."

If the Titans do decide that they don't want to take either Winston or Mariota then a trade becomes a very real possibility. The Titans do need a pass rusher, but if the Eagles or Browns come in offering several first round picks then they would surely be tempted to make the move down the draft board.
