Peter Schmeichel has suggested that Manchester United would love to sign Colombian striker Radamel Falcao if the forward was able to prove his fitness at the club.
As reported by Sky Sports, the club's former goalkeeper has insisted that Falcao has proven himself to be a fantastic goalscorer, but has been unlucky with injuries in his debut season at Old Trafford.
Falcao, of course, joined the Red Devils on a season-long loan deal from French outfit Monaco last summer, but has only managed four goals in his 19 appearances for the club under Louis van Gaal.
It appears, though, that Schmeichel hasn't given up hope of the striker becoming a permanent member of the United squad for next season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Manchester United legend said: “We knew when he came that he had this injury and it was his reaction to coming back that was to be the exciting part.
“Unfortunately he’s had more injuries but if he is a 100% from next season then he’s the kind of player that I think Manchester United would love to add permanently to the club.
“He has proven himself to be a fantastic goalscorer in the past and he’s been unlucky in the last 18 months. Hopefully he can get through this injury hell and get back to what he used to be.”
After taking him out of the firing line in the club's defeat at Swansea City this past weekend, United boss Louis van Gaal could yet recall Falcao to the starting XI for the club's upcoming fixture with Premier League strugglers Sunderland.
Now or never
And Falcao will have to take his chance sooner rather than later as he looks to make his mark in Manchester. Fans of the Red Devils will no doubt be hoping to see Falcao prove his credentials in the immediate future, with the club desperate to finish inside the Champions League places.
It won't be easy for the forward, however, as he has failed to find any rhythm or consistency in the red shirt under the Van Gaal regime this term. It looks set to be a huge couple of months for the Colombian at the Theatre of Dreams.
