Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira is in talks over a surprise move to Schalke, but nothing is agreed and a host of top Premier League clubs remain seriously interested undoubtedly the biggest Bosman transfer of the summer.
Khedira has stubbornly refused attempts from Madrid to hold contract talks, choosing to let his current deal run down until the summer so he can become a free agent.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are all still actively looking into the prospect of signing Khedira for nothing this summer, but decisions to delay any formal offer will be scrutinised heavily if Schalke steal in to bring him back to the Bundesliga.
Schalke have higher ambitions
Bild Sport report this morning that Schalke are targeting Khedira and other world-class stars in an effort to finally match Bayern Munich in Germany, desperate to prove they have the potential to go from a provincial power to a force at Europe's top table.
Wage demands may prove a stumbling block, but productive early talks have been held and Schalke chief Clemens Tonnies is confident his side can compete for top player moving forward. He hopes to send a message by signing Khedira, but you can't help but feel that his efforts may still fall short.
Chelsea's clever transfer policy suggests they'll get involved
Arsenal were the club most strongly linked with a move for Khedira last summer, but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger ultimately passed on the deal and you have to feel that ship has sailed.
Chelsea look far better placed to enter the race for his signature at this stage, particularly when you factor in the shrewd transfer dealings of a man in Mourinho that has a tremendous working relationship with Khedira dating back to his time in Madrid.
The Blues have been so efficient in terms of recruitment over the last 18 months its hard to believe they're not at least considering a move for Khedira, a world-class midfielder capable of performing dual roles in terms of being more protective or expansive depending on the game.
Mourinho will likely need to replace Jon Obi Mikel this summer if not Ramires to boot, Khedira is tailor-made to do just that and one phone call will surely be enough to stop him joining Schalke should it come down a straight choice between the two clubs.
