Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has insisted that Red Devils chief Louis van Gaal will be able to sign whoever he wants if the club secure a place in next season's Champions League competition.
Despite losing to Welsh outfit Swansea City in their last fixture, the Red Devils are currently sitting in fourth place in England's elite division, and Schmeichel certainly sees reason for optimism.
The club's former shot-stopper told the Daily Star: "In terms of getting results and points on the board, I think we're much better than what we were last season. I honestly can't remember how many points we had at this point last season but I assume we have at least 10 more points this season.
"We're only seven points behind Manchester City. It's not like last season when we were completely off the pace with no chance of anything at this point.

"The really positive thing for me is we're picking up points. We're getting three points very often. Obviously the defeat against Swansea was disappointing but we're doing well and we're getting points and that's the most important thing at this moment in time."
United's style of football has been criticised at times throughout the course of the campaign, however Schmeichel has insisted that the priority for the club must be ensuring their place in next year's elite European competition.
Champions League return
He continued by saying: "Let's get back into the top four, be a Champions League club again, sign players we want to sign who want to play in the Champions League and then we can start looking at things from an entertainment value."
"Once we get back to that and show the world that we're back on track then I think Van Gaal has the opportunity to sign anyone he wants."
Of course, Champions League qualification is not guaranteed for the Red Devils and they will have to go on a strong run under Van Gaal over the coming months.
Schmeichel is right
At the end of the day, despite some of the disappointing football at the Theatre of Dreams this term, United fans will no doubt be overjoyed if Van Gaal leads them into next season's Champions League competition.
And, there's no doubt about it, United will certainly be able to attract some of the top players in the world next summer and they will have the financial muscle to do just that.
